Cologne (dpa) - The strategy game "Iron Harvest" by the Bremen studio King Art is the big winner of the German Developer Award 2020. The critic's favorite prevailed against the competition in three categories, as the jury announced on Wednesday in Cologne.

These were “Best German Game”, “Best Game Design” and “Best Sound”.

Developer King Art also won the “Best Studio” award.

Games developed in Berlin were also recognized in other categories.

"Iron Harvest" is a so-called real-time strategy game - the genre also includes classics such as "Starcraft" or "Age of Empires".

The players control buildings and units, collect resources and use them to build an army to defeat their opponents.

The setting called “Diesel Punk” is a special feature of “Iron Harvest”.

It takes place in a world inspired by Eastern Europe around the year 1900, in which war machines as high as a house determine the war between three factions.

Unlike originally planned, the prizes could not be awarded at a festive gala - the reason was the corona pandemic.

Instead, the organizers opted for an online show.

The German Developer Award is the oldest award in the German games industry.

It has been awarded since 2004.

The jury is made up of people from different branches of the German game scene - such as programmers, journalists and influencers.

In addition to “Iron Harvest”, the historical strategy game “Through the Darkest of Times” by the developer Paintbucket Games from Berlin-Kreuzberg was also very successful.

It prevailed in the categories "Best Story" and "Best Indie Game".

The game takes the player back to the time of the Nazi regime in 1933. The task is to organize the resistance against Hitler with the resources that are scarce.

Other prizes went to “SpellForce 3 - Fallen God” from Grimlore Games from Munich in the “Best Graphics” category and to “High Rise” from smpl Games from Berlin as “Best Mobile Game”.

The well-known “Anno” series from Ubisoft was recognized as a long-running hit.

The indie studio Golden Orb from Witten won the “NRW Promotion Prize for Young Developers”.
