Berlin (dpa) - The food industry in Germany could not build on the growth of previous years in 2020.

"The important motor that the industry needs, export, has collapsed," said Stefanie Sabet, managing director of the Federal Association of the German Food Industry in Berlin on Wednesday.

The branch turnover reached an estimated 184.7 billion euros, 0.3 percent less than in the previous year.

Adjusted for price, this corresponds to a minus of 1.7 percent.

Domestic business grew slightly in nominal terms.

123.4 billion euros corresponded to an increase of 0.4 percent.

However, exports were 2.5 percent weaker than in 2019, mainly because demand from key European buyer countries fell, as Sabet said at the start of the Green Week agricultural fair.

The industry meeting was moved to the Internet this year because of the corona epidemic and only lasts two days.
