The outgoing Republican majority leader in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, sees President Donald Trump as responsible for the storming of the US Capitol.

The supporters of the outgoing president were "provoked by the president," said McConnell in a speech in the Senate.

"The mob was fed lies," added the Kentucky state senator.

"They were provoked by the president and other powerful people," said McConnell.

The rioters had "tried to use fear and violence" to "stop" certification of Joe Biden's election victory in the presidential election on November 3rd.

“But we continued,” he continued.

The members of Congress have stood together and shown that "an angry mob will not have veto power over the rule of law in our nation, not even for one night."

Thousands of Trump supporters violently stormed the Capitol on January 6th after an incendiary speech by Trump, the parliamentarians had to be brought to safety.

Five people were killed in the riot, including a police officer.

The House of Representatives then initiated impeachment proceedings against Trump for "inciting riot".

The trial itself takes place in the Senate; 17 Republican senators have to vote with the Democrats to convict Trump.

McConnell hasn't ruled out voting for Trump's condemnation.

He will remain a strong voice in the Republican Party when Democrat Chuck Schumer becomes the new Senate majority leader on Wednesday.
