On Tuesday morning, the Iranian ground forces began maneuvers in the Makran region, southeast of the country, in the presence of the Army Commander, Major General Abdul Rahim Mousavi.

The exercises are taking place with the participation of airborne brigades, special forces and rapid intervention, with the support and backing of the air force.

The maneuvers coincide with Iranian fears of adventures by the administration of outgoing US President Donald Trump.

The Iranian military said these exercises focus on the offensive dimension and specific targets for the first time.

The capabilities of the forces moving on the ground in the army will be evaluated to carry out offensive operations and move from Iranian territory towards the area of operations.

These maneuvers are part of the wide maneuvers of the Iranian armed forces, which also included naval and missile maneuvers.

The Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Major General Hossein Salami, said that the military maneuvers that the Iranian armed forces are conducting are a warning to those who called the enemy from committing a mistake against Iran.

He added - on the sidelines of his participation in a forum on the Iran-Iraq war - that the exercises are part of Iran's deterrent strategy.

He pointed out that "the maneuvers are an important part of the deterrence policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, so that the enemies do not make a mistake in their calculations or assessments regarding the country's defense capabilities."

The nuclear deal

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said that Tehran "confirms on the last day of Donald Trump's ill-fated presidency that his reckless policy and his maximum pressure have failed to achieve their goals."

Zarif added during his participation in a parliament meeting that his country is not in a hurry to return Washington to the nuclear deal.

"We are following the approach of the leader of the Islamic revolution," he said, adding, "The commander emphasized in his speech last week that we are in no hurry about America's return to the nuclear deal."

"His Eminence, the Leader of the Revolution, emphasized that we are not in a hurry, but when America fulfills its obligations and revokes the embargo on Iran, it can return to the nuclear agreement within the framework of 5 + 1."

In response to questions from some parliamentarians in the Islamic Consultative Assembly regarding foreign policy, Zarif said, "The law passed by the parliament is for the purpose of implementing the nuclear agreement, not burying it."
