Berlin / Hanover (dpa) - The acute bottlenecks in important semiconductor products such as electronic chips and sensors are increasingly alarming the German auto industry.

In the meantime, there were discussions with politicians about how the situation could be defused, said the industry association VDA in Berlin.

"Globally, intensive work is being done to ensure the supply of semiconductors - especially at the chip manufacturer level," it said.

"The VDA is also in contact with the federal government on this."

At manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Daimler or Audi, quite a few shifts had recently failed.

That is why there is temporarily more short-time working again.

Processors of semiconductor material and automotive suppliers such as Hella or Continental also spoke of bottlenecks.

Some other industries also have problems.

"Due to various influences, the global demand for certain semiconductor components is currently higher than the supply," said the VDA.

"The global automotive industry and electronics suppliers are also affected by this shortage."

One of the causes is the tense situation at some central suppliers, including in Asia.

The current peak in demand for semiconductors comes as a surprise to some chip manufacturers - the auto business is picking up again earlier than expected, while other industries such as entertainment electronics or medical technology also want to be supplied.

In addition, there are underutilized capacities for the raw material silicon in the important producer country China.
