Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller sees the mutation of the corona virus as a new challenge in the fight against the pandemic.

If the new variant is twice as contagious, efforts to contain it would have to be doubled, said the SPD politician on Tuesday after the Bund-Länder consultations in Berlin.

And that just means further restricting contacts, for example in transport or at work.

The measures taken over the past few weeks were slowly starting to take effect, and the number of infections was slowly falling, said Müller.

"There are successes, but you have to take what is happening around us seriously," he said, referring to the virus mutation that is already widespread in Ireland and Great Britain.

Therefore, the support and solidarity of all citizens is called for again.

"Avoiding contacts (...) remains the be-all and end-all," said Müller.

Germany is in a situation "in which you cannot lean back, but in which you do not have to be discouraged with what we have achieved so far."
