Wernigerode / Halle (dpa / sa) - Tourism in Saxony-Anhalt has collapsed due to the lockdown.

In November 2020, the accommodation companies reported around 200,000 overnight stays and thus a decrease of around 65 percent compared to the same month last year, as the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday.

The number of visitors compared to November 2019 fell by 78 percent to around 57,000 guests.

For the period between January and November 2020, the accommodation companies in Saxony-Anhalt counted 2.2 million guest arrivals and 5.8 million overnight stays.

This corresponds to a decrease of 34.7 percent for guests and 27.8 percent for overnight stays.

From November 2nd, according to the Corona Containment Ordinance, overnight stays for tourist purposes were not allowed.

In the Harz, the drop in the number of guests was then the highest at around 91 percent, said the statistics authority.

The Harz narrow-gauge railways, which are popular with tourists, have also experienced “clear breaks”, said a spokesman for the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB).

With a few exceptions, rail traffic on the approximately 140-kilometer route network has largely come to a standstill.

After all, there are compensation payments for local transport companies with which HSB can absorb a large part of its losses.
