Halle (dpa / sa) - The head of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle, Reint Gropp, considers the higher national debt in the corona pandemic in Germany to be acceptable.

The state can afford a relatively large amount of debt as long as the economy is efficient, he said in a podcast by MDR aktuell.

Exceeding the debt limit of 60 percent of the gross domestic product is a one-time thing.

The federal government must try to ensure that the economy grows again, said Gropp.

If he can do that, "these debts will be relatively easy to bear".

The Federal Republic currently pays no interest on some of its loans, but earns from negative interest.
