Jakarta (dpa) - In severe flooding on the island of Borneo, at least 15 people died according to the disaster control.

After days of massive rainfall, the 890-kilometer-long Barito River burst its banks.

Ten districts in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Selatan are under water.

According to President Joko Widodo, it is the worst flooding in the region in 50 years.

More than 24,000 houses were sunk in the floods, 40,000 people were homeless, reported the Antara News.

The provincial administration had already declared a state of emergency yesterday.

In Kalimantan, large parts of the important rainforest have been cleared for years to make room for mining and palm oil plantations, among other things.

Meanwhile, the number of victims has risen to 40 after several landslides in Sumedang Province in West Java.

Another eight missing people were found dead from the earth, said a spokesman for the authorities on Tuesday.

Heavy rains initially triggered a landslide on January 9th.

A few hours later, a second landslide buried several of the emergency services that had rushed up.
