January 19, 2021The swearing in, inaugural address, show and virtual parade along Pennsylvania Avenue, January 20 is Joe Biden's day to take office as the 46th president of the United States of America.

When and where

12 o'clock (6 pm in Italy) in the west wing of the Campidoglio.

"America United"

This is the theme chosen for each settlement, a kind of political "soundtrack" of the ceremony.

Biden's is

"America United"

.

The new president aims to launch the message of a "journey that unites the country and brings back the American spirit", as explained by the organizing committee of the event.

In 2017 Trump focused on the theme of his campaign, "Make America Great Again", in which he put America and Americans first.

Who will not be there

The outgoing president usually attends the inauguration of his successor to demonstrate a peaceful transition of power.

But

Donald Trump

, who has continued to pile up false allegations of electoral fraud and lawsuits in several states since the November 3 elections, will not be there.

In his place will be the outgoing Vice President, Mike Pence.

The last president to snub the oath of his successor was Andrew Johnson in 1869.

Jimmy Carter

will also be missing this year for age-related health precautions

, for the first time since 1977.

Who will be there

Only a thousand guests (with masks and social distancing), largely chosen by members of Congress, against the at least 200,000 traditionally invited by parliamentarians: to evoke this crowd of absent

as many American flags

lined up on the Mall and illuminated by 56 columns of light, the number of States and American territories.

All former presidents present (apart from Trump and Carter).

In 2017, about 700,000 people attended the event, and 11,000 men were involved in security,

more agents and soldiers

are expected at the settlement of Biden

than the public

.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser appealed to citizens, in no uncertain terms, asking to stay at home.

For its part, Airbnb has made it known that it has canceled and blocked reservations for the capital.

Local activists called on the First Citizen to close all hotels, but she refused to go that far.

Not only that: the authorities are so determined to keep people away that they plan to block all connections with neighboring Virginia.

Security

Twenty-five thousand National Guard soldiers

deployed in Washington

.

Thousands of police and federal agents watch over the federal area where the ceremony is taking place.

Closed the National Mall, Memorial Parks, all parking lots around the White House and Capitol Hill, thirteen subway stations and access bridges to the area.

To the

protesters who want to contest Biden

two areas have been assigned: the Navy Memorial Plaza and the John Marshall Park.

Only a hundred will be able to enter, they will be searched and escorted.

The Oath

This is the formula: "I, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr, solemnly swear to loyally fulfill the office of President of the United States, and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution to the best of my ability. God help me."

Le Bibles

Biden, who at 78 will become the oldest president in American history (46 / mo), will swear before Supreme Court President John Roberts on an old and large family bible (127 years old), kept by his wife Jill.

It is the bible on which all the most important dates of the family are noted, including its previous oaths.

Kamala Harris, who will make history as the first female and African-American vice president, will instead swear before Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic judge of the supreme court and former colleague as a prosecutor.

She chose two bibles: one from Regina Shelton, a close family friend she considered her 'second mother', and one from Thurgood Marshall, a civil rights icon and first African American judge of the supreme court, one of her inspirers.

The speech

After the oath rite, the new president's speech to the nation: a message of unity.

In 2017 Trump, with a speech of about 16 minutes, repeated the themes of the electoral campaign: defense of borders, fight against immigration, prosperity, nationalism and distrust in Washington politics.

The

23-year-old

poet and football player

Amanda Gorman, the national youth's first graduate poet in 2017, will read verses written for the occasion, 'The Hill We Climb'.

Like Biden, she too had to deal with the problem of stuttering.

American activist from Los Angeles, she focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, marginalization and the African diaspora.

Among the promising young players Sarah Fuller, the first woman to score in a game in the US university football championship.

The anthem and the show: Lady Gaga and J-Lo

Lady Gaga will then sing the American anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.

Following, the Jennifer Lopez show.

Country music star Garth Brooks was among the guests.

Fidelity to the flag

For the iconic moment of reading the Pledge of Allegiance, the pledge of allegiance to the flag, Andrea Hall, the first African American woman to be named fire lieutenant, was chosen.

The religious invocation that opens the event belongs to Reverend Leo O'Donovan, former president of Georgetown University, while the blessing will be given by Reverend Silvester Beaman, Biden's spiritual advisor for more than thirty years.

In 2017 the stars were Jackie Evancho, 17, the singer who came second in 2010 on the TV show "America's Got Talent" and the dancers of The Radio Rockettes.

The evening show The evening

special - a total of 90 minutes on all networks except Fox - is hosted by Tom Hanks, starring Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington.

Guests: Justin Timberlake, Jon Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato, BruceSpringsteen, Foo Fighters, John Legend, Ant Clemons and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Pass in Review and Arlington Cemetery

After the ceremony Biden and Harris will complete the traditional 'Pass in Review' inspection, reviewing troops in a ritual that symbolizes the peaceful transfer of power to a new commander in chief.

Then, with their respective spouses, First Lady Jill and Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff, they will pay tribute to the Arlington Monumental Cemetery, along with three past presidential couples: the Clintons, the Obamas and the Bushes.

The congressional dinner of honor has been canceled.

In its place, an exchange of gifts between the president, vice and members of Capitol Hill.

The parade

At 3 pm, 9 pm in Italy, Jill and Joe Biden participate in the "Parade Across America", along Pennsylvania Avenue, only virtual, no audience, due to pandemic.

The nation's heroes will be celebrated and the country's diversity, heritage and resilience will be highlighted, according to information released by the Inaugural Committee.

Arrival at the White House

The Bidens will be welcomed into their new home by Harleth, a former employee of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, who is likely to be replaced soon by the new hosts.

Joe and Jill know the White House well, but Melania has been careful not to invite the new first lady to show the changes made over the past four years.

There was no tea between Melania and Jill, as is customary, not even a phone call.
