In all established cases, the samples have been sent on for in-depth analysis.

All five people who have been infected in Gävleborg must, however, feel well and infection tracking is ongoing.

- We continue the work with infection tracing and urge visitors from the UK or South Africa to follow the Swedish Public Health Agency's recommendations.

For everyone, it is important to continue to help prevent all spread of infection by following recommendations such as staying home for symptoms, avoiding congestion and washing your hands, says Shah Jalal, infection control doctor in the Gävleborg Region.

Previously, a case of the South African virus variant was also discovered in Gävleborg.

Both this variant and the variant from the United Kingdom are suspected to be more contagious than the common coronavirus, but there is no indication that the mutated viruses would cause a more serious disease.

The Public Health Agency urges all entrants who have stayed in the UK or South Africa to stay at home for at least seven days, as well as to avoid contact with others and test themselves as soon as possible after arrival.

Others in the household are also recommended to stay at home waiting for test results.
