Lübeck (dpa / lno) - Despite the corona pandemic, the supply of blood reserves in Schleswig-Holstein is largely secured, according to the DRK blood donation service North-East.

However, there is a shortage of canned food with blood groups A rhesus negative and 0 rhesus negative, said the spokeswoman for the blood donation service, Susanne von Rabenau.

Clinic demand for blood reserves is largely unchanged despite the lockdown and postponement of predictable surgeries, she said.

In the past few days, according to Rabenaus, a few donors have canceled their previously agreed blood donation appointments due to the tightened hygiene rules.

She stressed that attending blood donation appointments is still safe.

Conserved blood from group 0 rhesus-negative donors are in particular demand according to DRK information, as they are suitable for all recipients regardless of their blood group.

Here the supplies only lasted for a day or a day and a half, said von Rabenau.

According to the DRK's «blood barometer», there is also a worryingly low supply of blood group A rhesus negative.

According to the information, canned blood has a limited shelf life.
