Moscow (AP) - Russia wants to finish the controversial Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2 despite expected US sanctions.

Moscow intends to "continue the continuous work on the completion of this project," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, according to the Interfax agency.

Russia deplored the actions of the United States.

"This international project is still confronted with rough, illegal pressure from the US," complained Peskow.

The US embassy in Berlin informed the federal government on Monday that the US wanted to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 this Tuesday.

The punitive measures are intended to affect the Russian laying ship "Fortuna", which is involved in the construction of the pipeline.

Because of the impending US sanctions, the billion-dollar project was stopped shortly before completion at the end of 2019. In the future, an additional 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be pumped from Russia to Germany every year through the two lines. The US is up against the gas pipeline because it sees its partners in Europe as being too dependent on Russia. Critics accuse the USA, however, of only wanting to sell their liquefied gas better in Europe. Construction work resumed last month.
