Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The current corona lockdown has largely brought youth work in the country to a standstill, according to the state youth council.

The current restrictions did not allow the regular work of youth clubs, for example, said Anna Herbst from the State Youth Council.

Children and young people were "very much thrown back on their core families" in the Corona crisis.

If they had fewer resources, this would also affect the young people.

"Youth work and youth welfare simply cannot act in a compensatory manner in Corona times".

Young people had complained about boredom or increasing conflicts after their youth club had to close in lockdown.

Corona debates are often only about children and young people as schoolchildren, criticizes Herbst.

Leisure time and contact with peers is also important.

Here youth work provides important support for families and enables children and young people to grow up healthily.

Corona also makes child protection more difficult because the contact restrictions prevent direct contact with families.

According to Herbst, the corona crisis is associated with financial burdens.

For example, it is about computers and software to continue youth work digitally.

"And for that you need money."

Hygiene measures resulted in additional costs.

Income has also declined, for example because less money is collected through collection campaigns.

In other federal states, youth welfare and youth work organizations have been included in corona protection funds.

"And that was unfortunately missed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania," criticized Herbst.

According to its own statements, the state youth council is the largest representation of the interests of children and young people in the state.
