Kiel / Itzehoe (dpa / lno) - There has been a major corona outbreak in a prison in Itzehoe.

There 16 prisoners and 7 judicial employees tested positive for the corona virus, as the Ministry of Justice announced on Tuesday.

All prisoners were isolated in solitary cells.

So-called FFP2 masks would be worn when movements were necessary.

The employees concerned are in quarantine at home.

The correctional facility will initially continue to operate in two shifts.

According to the health department, there is a suspicion that it could be a mutated virus due to the high level of infection.

At the end of last week, another prisoner was taken to a prison in Kiel.

There he was tested positive and immediately transferred to the infirmary in Neumünster.

Rapid tests on other prisoners in his department were negative.

However, as a precautionary measure, 31 prisoners were transferred to quarantine stations in the prisons in Lübeck and Neumünster and Schleswig.

"All the necessary measures were taken to keep what was happening under control and to prevent the further spread of infections as well as possible," said Justice Minister Claus Christian Claussen (CDU).

The execution in the youth detention center Moltsfelde in Neumünster has been suspended so that the institution can serve as an infirmary if necessary.
