Schwerin (dpa) - The controversial environmental foundation of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which could also promote the construction of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, is founded according to the government.

The foundation supervision in the Ministry of Justice recognized the legal capacity, said Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's energy minister Christian level (SPD) the «Schweriner Volkszeitung».

"This established the foundation and now has a life of its own."

The foundation, which is oriented towards the common good, aims to promote projects in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection, but also to be able to be commercially active.

The foundation plans to buy components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline.

This is intended to circumvent threatened US sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the line as far as possible.

The US government wants to impose sanctions for the first time because of the German-Russian Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Economics had confirmed that the punitive measures should be announced this Tuesday and affect the Russian laying ship "Fortuna" involved in the construction of the pipeline.

The US embassy in Berlin informed the federal government about this on Monday.
