Burg / Naumburg (dpa / sa) - As a precautionary measure to protect against African swine fever, the district of Jerichower Land has purchased special fences.

If necessary, a 25-kilometer barrier can be built, the district announced on Tuesday.

The aim is to contain the spread of the disease in the event of a possible outbreak.

To this end, the location of an infected animal is completely fenced in within a radius of about four kilometers, it said.

So far, no case of this swine fever is known in Saxony-Anhalt.

However, the disease, which is harmless to humans, has already occurred in Saxony and Brandenburg.

Domestic pigs and wild boars almost always die when they become infected with the pathogen.

Poultry farmers also have to react to an animal disease. After the outbreak of avian influenza in Germany in October of last year, stable housing is now recommended, the Burgenland district said. A corresponding obligation currently applies in Lützen and Weißenfels. It could be "expanded to the entire state of Saxony-Anhalt in the near future," it said.
