The Swedish Board of Agriculture has cordoned off the farm and established a protection area with a radius of three kilometers around the farm.

The farm has a total of nine stables with thousands of laying hens in each stable, and it is in one of the stables that bird flu has been found so far.

- Yesterday, the stable where the infection was found was killed and then we continue to kill in the nearby stables during the day, says Katharina Gielen who is deputy head of the animal department at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Aggressive virus

The bird flu is highly contagious between birds and is spread through infected wild birds or birds that move between different herds.

The virus is not dangerous to humans, but can be devastating to get into bird herds.

The case in Kalmar County is the fourth since the turn of the year and the first outside Skåne.

- It seems to be a very aggressive virus type of bird flu this year where they die quite quickly, says Katharina Gielen.

The farm where the infection came in is Sweden's largest egg producer with millions of laying hens in the herd.

SVT has sought comment from the farm in question, which refers all questions to the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
