USA The five key points of Joe Biden's offensive to turn around Trump's legacy
The president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, and the vice president-elect, Kamala Harris, honored the
more than 400,000 deaths that the pandemic has left
in the country on
Tuesday
, on the eve of their inauguration in Washington.
In his first act in
Washington
, where he had just arrived from
Delaware
, Biden approached the
Lincoln Memorial
, one of the most iconic in the capital, along with Harris and their husbands,
Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff
, respectively.
"To heal we have to remember, and it is difficult sometimes to remember, but that is how we heal. It is important to do that as a country," Biden said, hours after the death toll in the country surpassed 400,000.
The president-elect then asked to
"shine the light on the dark,"
and then the outline of the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial was illuminated.
Biden, Harris and their respective partners were silent before the pond,
illuminated with 400 lights
representing the lives lost due to the disease, while the song "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen played.
Shortly before, Harris described the United States as
"a nation in mourning"
but was confident that the country can emerge from the pandemic with a "new wisdom" that allows "to appreciate the simple moments, imagine new possibilities and open hearts" .
"Tonight we come together and begin to heal together," the vice president-elect said.
Hundreds of cities, towns and tribes in the country signed up for the tribute to the victims and illuminated at the same time (17:30 local time, 22:30 GMT) their most iconic monuments, such as the
Empire State Building in New York or Space Needle in Seattle
, as well as ringing its church bells.
At the Washington ceremony, the song '
Amazing Grace' was
also sung by
a
Detroit
(Michigan)
nurse
named
Lori Key
, who became famous for performing the same song to encourage her colleagues who were fighting COVID-19.
Biden will take office as president of the United States this Wednesday at 12.00 Washington time (17:00 GMT), in a ceremony on the
Capitol
with little public and under strict security measures.
