Nauen (dpa / bb) - The Nauen Zoo is no longer allowed to house animals due to a lack of appropriate animal husbandry.

The responsible veterinary office ordered that according to the Havelland district.

Despite several official orders, the animal owner had to ensure that his animals were kept in a more species-appropriate manner, letting the time available to him pass unused, as a spokesman for the district announced on Tuesday when asked.

In addition, a ban on keeping and caring for animals was imposed on the zoo.

According to the district, the veterinary office had already carried out several checks last year on the grounds of the Nauen Zoo because of “some serious animal welfare deficiencies” and issued conditions.

The animals, including raccoons, monkeys, donkeys and rabbits, are now housed elsewhere at the expense of the animal owner, according to the district.

The zoo was initially not available for comment.

On Tuesday there was a notice on the Internet: “Temporarily closed”.

Initially, the “Märkische Allgemeine” and “BZ” reported.

The animal welfare organization Aktion Tier reportedly filed a complaint against the animal owner at the end of November for violating various animal welfare regulations.

She was happy that action was finally taken, said the managing director for animal welfare, Ursula Bauer.

According to Aktion Tier, the entire area was like a garbage dump.

The zoo director had shown neither expertise nor love for animals in his animal husbandry.

Sometimes far too many animals were crammed together in a very small space.

The unsanitary conditions had a high health risk.

In the meantime, monkeys and raccoons have been brought to a wildlife station in Sachsenhagen in Lower Saxony, reported Bauer, who was there when the zoo was closed.

The other animals were distributed according to their information from the district to various institutions.
