51 members of the Libyan Political Forum approved the mechanism for selecting the executive authority, while 19 others rejected it, and two members abstained from voting.

A source from the forum told Al-Jazeera that the approval rate for the mechanism for selecting the executive authority reached 73%.

The executive authority to be formed will consist of a new presidential council and the head of a government of national unity, to administer the country in a transitional period that ends on December 24, the date of the general elections.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced Tuesday, in a statement published on its official website Tuesday, that the voting process took one day, "starting from Monday, January 18 to Tuesday, January 19, when the mission requested members of the forum to cast their votes." .

72 members of the Forum for Political Dialogue participated in the voting process, 51 of them voted in favor of the proposed mechanism, representing about 73% of the votes, while 19 members voted against it, while two members abstained from voting, and two others did not participate in the process.

The mission added that, since "the proposal of the advisory committee received 73% of the votes, the proposal was approved by exceeding the required minimum set by the advisory committee with 63% of the votes cast."

The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, commented on what happened, saying, “Today marks the first anniversary of the Berlin International Conference on Libya. With this vote, the members of the Forum took an important step towards the implementation of the roadmap that was adopted in Tunis in the middle of November ".

Williams added that Libyans have a "real opportunity to transcend their differences and divisions," and to choose an interim government to reunite their institutions through the long-awaited democratic national elections.

She said, "This is a temporary executive authority that will be replaced by a democratically elected authority, after the elections on December 24, 2021."

The Libyan parties agreed at the Forum for Political Dialogue, whose first round was held in Tunis on the ninth of last November, to hold general elections on December 24, 2021.
