Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Almost half of all daycare and after-school care children are currently cared for outside of the home in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, despite the corona pandemic.

"55.7 percent of the approximately 110,000 children who are regularly supported in day care, kindergarten or after-school care are currently cared for at home," said the spokesman for the Ministry of Social Affairs, Alexander Kujat, on Tuesday in Schwerin.

That was the result of a query from the ministry to the districts and independent cities with a reference date of January 14th.

In the week before, the proportion of children at home was slightly higher at 57 percent.

According to this, especially small children are brought to daycare despite the state government's appeals to look after them at home if possible.

In the crèche, almost 60 percent (58.4) currently attend a facility.

In the kindergarten it was 51.9 percent on the reporting date.

By contrast, 28.7 percent came to the after-school care center, where elementary school students can be looked after before and after class.

The Prime Ministers of the federal states also wanted to consult with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on Tuesday about ways to expand the home office in order to reduce contacts and the number of infections in Germany.

During the first wave in spring, according to information from the federal government, 27 percent of employees were working from home, currently it is only 15 percent.

Social Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) emphasized that not all people could work at home.

Many working parents, for example in the medical or nursing field, are dependent on the care of their children, she said.

For family reasons, some children need support in the day care center.

In the interests of these parents and children, it is important that the daycare centers are open.

Corona cases only exist in a few day-care centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Currently there are 12 of around 1500 daycare centers and after-school care centers in MV.
