After hearing "knocking sounds", rescue workers drilled a small hole to the place where the trapped people are, and through this the miners got a piece of paper.

Twelve of the 22 detainees are said to be alive, but several will need emergency help.

"We are in urgent need of medicine, painkillers, medical tape and anti-inflammatory drugs, and three people have high blood pressure," they wrote in the message, which continues: "We hope that rescue workers do not stop fighting so that we can still live on hope.

The detonation that caused the landslide destroyed the communication devices and the authorities have not previously been able to get in touch with the trapped workers.

In December, 23 miners died after being trapped in a mine in Chongqing, and a few months earlier, 16 died of carbon monoxide poisoning in another mine in the same city.
