First appeal against the postponement of the Catalan regional elections.

The Lliga Democràtica -a new formation of Catalan stamp without representation and that was not going to appear in the elections- has challenged this Monday before the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) the decree by which the Government of the Generalitat left without effect the vote initially scheduled for February 14 and promised to call it again for May 30, if the evolution of the pandemic allows it.

The Lliga precisely underlines that "the most serious thing is not that the elections are postponed, but that the new call is postponed

sine die

" and that the Government, "without any legal basis, is empowered to call them or not in the future depending on the assessment that he himself makes of the sanitary circumstances ”.

In the opinion of the recurring political formation, this circumstance causes "absolute defenselessness and legal insecurity and a suspension of democracy."

And it is that the decree by which the Government annuls the election call of February 14 - published on Saturday in the BOE - stipulates that "the elections to the Parliament will be called to take place on May 30, 2021, after analysis of the epidemiological and public health circumstances and of the evolution of the pandemic in the territory of Catalonia, and with prior deliberation by the Government ”.

In other words, the decree itself shows that the elections could be held later than announced depending on what the Catalan Executive ends up determining.

Waiting for more resources

This could not be the only recourse against the Government's decision to postpone the elections, since on Friday Vox already anticipated its intention to challenge the revocation of 14-F if it found a legal loophole to do so.

The Catalan employers Foment and Pimec are also studying to follow in the footsteps of the Lliga Democràtica.

After firmly opposing the postponement and being the only party present at Friday's meeting in the Parliament that declared itself in disagreement with the new date chosen by the Government, the PSC assured that it would only appeal if new candidates or coalitions are allowed to attend the elections.

Extreme that, he considers, would alter "the rules of the game."
