Berlin (dpa / bb) - After an attack on a snack bar owner with alleged xenophobic insults, the district councilor Harald Sielaff (CDU) apologized to the victim according to a "Tagesspiegel" report.

The 55-year-old local politician will "actively support" the legal processing of the matter, the newspaper quoted on Monday from a statement by Sielaff.

In addition, he announced his immediate resignation as committee chairman.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 4.30 p.m. at a snack bar on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg, as the police announced on Monday.

Accordingly, Sielaff is said to have rioted there and racially insulted the 41-year-old operator.

He is also said to have asked for the man's residence permit.

After all, the local politician is said to have thrown a plastic bottle from the counter into the snack bar.

The attacked was reportedly hit by sauce on his clothing and face.

Sielaff told the police that he had drunk alcohol.

The «Tagesspiegel» reported that Sielaff regretted the incident.

In a personal statement it also said: «I am convinced that racist statements and abusive mobbing have no place in our city.

... I am personally sorry for the events that took place yesterday under the influence of alcohol and I also personally apologized to the snack bar operator for the inconvenience.
