• Prison: Phil Spector's hair metamorphosis in prison

  • Couple. Ronnie Spector: "Men wanted to take all the credit for what I did, even if they were my ideas"

With permission from Quincy Jones, the quirky Phil Spector - a name and looks worthy of haunting movies - made history by changing the sound of pop with the creation of the 'wall of sound' (recording multiple backing tracks overlapping them).

The producer died on Saturday at age 81 from causes derived from the

coronavirus

.

When in 1961 he founded his own label, Philles Records, he became the master of the industry.

He was the one who gave

Cher

a great opportunity to

sing for the first time at the tender age of 16.

Throughout his life his strong temper gave much to talk about.

And some greats in musical history suffered from their 'going' from the pot.

In the recording studios he loved to fiddle with revolvers and scare his artists, as happened with

Los Ramones

, whom he shot.

John Lennon

turned pale during the recording of 'Rock and Roll' in 1973 when he saw him shoot the ceiling and

Leonard Cohen

begged him not to kill him while preparing 'Death of a ladies' man' (1977).

Misogynistic, controlling, unbalanced and 'drunk', the producer of Tina Turner, Rolling Stones or The Beatles amused himself by

playing Russian roulette with the women with whom he wanted to have forced sex

.

His wives also suffered from his follies.

The second, Ronnie, lead singer of the famous sixties trio The Ronettes, locked her up for several years in his mansion and subjected her to continuous harassment and psychological punishment.

In his official Instagram account, the singer affirms that, as a producer, he was the best and that having met him and falling in love was like living a fairy tale.

But he does not forget the internal demons he possessed.

Of his four marriages, he leaves five children.

Phil Spector, during his trial, in 2009.

But that was not the most extreme.

In 2003 one of the bullets was fatal.

In a nightclub in Los Angeles he had met a stunning blonde who was making her way as an actress and model,

Lana Clarkson

, whom he invited to his impregnable home, The Pyrinees Castle, whose construction was inspired by French castles and from which he I could see all the beauty of the San Gabriel Valley.

Spector shot her dead.

After a failed trial, a judge sentenced him in 2009 to 19 years in prison for Clarkson's murder.

He never wanted to go unnoticed, much less have his wake fade.

Hence,

behind bars he continued giving interviews with wigs and glasses as varied as in a carnival

.

During his deprivation of liberty, his third wife, Rachelle Short, began to squander a large part of the producer's fortune estimated at

35 million dollars

.

Forty years his junior, the woman bought luxury cars, jewelry, and a small plane.

Hence, in 2016 he asked for a divorce.

The main theme of 'Ghost' (1990), 'Unchained Melody', still resonates in the collective memory of several generations, a beautiful song of eternal love produced by Spector for the

Righterous Brothers

.

Before laying his bones in jail, Spector last recorded at London's established Abbey Road studios in 2002 for the alternative rock group

Starsailor

.
