Berlin (dpa) - Environmental associations have appealed against a decision by the responsible federal office, according to which the Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 may be continued earlier.

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) confirmed on Monday that e-mails were received from Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu).

This means that the permit that applies to German waters is temporarily out of force.

On Friday, the BSH allowed immediate construction of the pipeline in German waters.

The previous permit would normally not have allowed work to be done until the end of May.

The DUH and the Nabu immediately announced resistance.
