Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony's Agriculture Minister Barbara Otte-Kinast warns of ever new requirements for agriculture.

"Society wants farmers to meet ever higher and new standards, but without rewarding them," said the CDU politician of the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" on Monday.

She cited the fertilizer ordinance and requirements for better animal welfare as examples.

“That's why politicians have to stop now.

We have to give the farmers a respite and not make new demands, for example on insect protection, ”said Otte-Kinast.

In their impression, many farmers are ready to make changes, but these have to be financed.

"Let's take the example of animal husbandry: it is clear that the animal-friendly conversion of the stables costs a lot of money - but farmers cannot pay for it alone," said the minister.

She renewed her call for an animal welfare tax.

Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) wanted to present a plan at the end of February on how the conversion of the stables could be financed with this steering tax.

Many farmers in Lower Saxony have demonstrated in recent months against dropping prices for food.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the digital Green Week takes place as a meeting of the food and agricultural sectors.
