Saarbrücken (dpa) The director of the 42nd Max Ophüls Preis (MOP) film festival in Saarbrücken, Svenja Böttger, was satisfied with the start of the first online edition and spoke of a “good festival start”: “There were great, positive reactions and resonances, ”she said on Monday at the request of the German Press Agency.

1000 viewers were live on the streaming platform and the YouTube channel on which the opening was broadcast on Sunday evening.

By Monday morning, the number of users had risen to 2,700, "and the trend is rising".

Due to the corona pandemic, the 42nd edition of the MOP will take place for the first time as a pure online festival until January 24th, the speeches and interviews for the opening event had already been pre-produced, as was the awarding of the honorary prize to director and producer Wim Wenders.

In the opinion of the Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans (CDU), it is thanks to “the foresight and skill” of the festival organizers that they were able to experience the Ophüls competition this week despite everything.

"Your creative handling of the given situation and the clever use of digital media and formats made the implementation and thus the continuity of the competition possible in the first place," he said in a video message at the opening of the festival.

By the way, they would have taken on a pioneering role in the use of innovative technologies.

A total of 98 films will be shown until January 24th.
