Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has ordered another five million FFP2 masks.

The background of the procurement is a possible accelerated spread of coronavirus mutations, said the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin on Monday.

In addition, a million so-called surgical masks are to be procured.

The finance committee of the state parliament gave the green light for this.

Stricter corona measures cannot be ruled out before the federal-state consultations on Tuesday.

As a result, the prices of protective masks could rise significantly.

FFP2 masks filter particles out of the air more effectively than everyday masks made of fabric, but they also do not offer 100 percent protection against the coronavirus.

According to the ministry, the masks ordered will initially be stored in the country's central disaster control warehouse.

It was initially unclear who would receive them and how expensive they were.
