Neulewin (dpa / bb) - A homeowner in Neulewin (Märkisch-Oderland) in the Oderbruch has forcibly routed a suspected burglar.

According to police, a villager noticed on Saturday evening how the man was trying to get onto a property and notified the owner.

The threatened the man in vain and then hit him several times with a baseball bat, the police said on Monday.

The suspected burglar initially disappeared, but returned.

When a window was opened on his knock, he tried to climb in and grab the resident.

He stepped in again with the baseball bat and fended off the intruder.

Then the stranger fled for good.

The criminal police have started investigations - not only against the alleged burglar. She also confiscated the landowner's baseball bat and checked whether the man's use of it had exceeded his right to self-defense.
