Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Shortly before the next deliberations by the federal and state governments on how to deal with the corona pandemic, Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff urged that existing rules be implemented more consistently.

The CDU politician told Deutschlandfunk on Monday that there is still "enormous potential" for working from home, using company canteens and people's daily mobility.

Haseloff viewed another shutdown of the economy as critical.

The cost of dealing with the pandemic and the vaccinations could only be paid with a functioning core economy, he said.

At the same time, representatives from Saxony-Anhalt from the trade and the construction industry, which has barely been restricted to date, warned against expanding the lockdown to other sectors.

On Tuesday, both the black-red-green state government and the heads of government from the federal and state levels will meet to discuss the current corona situation.

The construction sites should remain open, warned the general manager of the Saxony-Anhalt construction trade association, Giso Töpfer, on Monday.

It is counterproductive to only build again when all other areas are restarted.

In addition, construction companies would have to be available for emergencies such as burst pipes, storm damage and the like.

The trade also warned against restricting construction operations.

So far, the situation there has not been so dramatic for craft businesses either, said the President of the Magdeburg Chamber of Crafts, Hagen Mauer.

A work ban for the industry would have a major impact on events and promised deadlines for construction projects would be invalid.

In countries like Ireland and Great Britain, mutations are causing rapid infection rates.

Against this background and with a view to the infection situation, which remained tense in many places even after months of restrictions, there were calls for a hard lockdown for all areas of the economy, an obligation to wear filter masks of the type FFP2 for certain everyday transactions and a shutdown of local public transport in order to reduce the number of To push new infections back to a controllable level.

According to Prime Minister Haseloff, there are signs of a positive development.

It would have to be refined at certain points so that events in Germany do not develop in a similar way to that in Ireland and other European countries, said Haseloff.

In fact, the health ministry's new survey on Monday indicated that the situation was calming down somewhat.

After the turn of the year, the number of reported new infections and corona deaths in Saxony-Anhalt rose rapidly.

From Sunday to Monday, the ministry reported 420 new evidence of the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen.

This means that the virus has been detected in 243.7 out of 100,000 residents of Saxony-Anhalt in the past seven days.

On Monday a week ago, this proportion was at a similar level (244.4).

According to the overview, 194 Covid patients had to be treated in the intensive care units, 12 fewer than a week ago.

Compared to the previous day, the health authorities reported 15 more deaths.

Since the beginning of the corona pandemic in March 2020, 1207 men and women have died of an infection in Saxony-Anhalt.

275 of these deaths were reported in the past seven days.

A total of 43,850 corona cases are known to the Saxony-Anhalt authorities, every fifth affected person (8,876 people) is currently still actively infected according to expert estimates.

At the same time, very old people and employees in clinics and nursing homes will continue to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

According to the Ministry of Health, almost 33,150 men and women have received a first dose so far.

679 people have already been given the second dose, so they have full vaccination protection.

The central point of contact in the Stendal district started operations on Monday.

At the start of the vaccination center, all registered men and women came to their appointments, said a district spokeswoman.

Until mid-March, 36 appointments had been assigned for each day.

It should be clear by the end of January how less mobile people over 80 years of age could be cared for outside of the vaccination center.

The prerequisite is that there is more vaccine.
