Kassel / Hanau (dpa / lhe) - In the fight against hatred and agitation, the Evangelical Church (EKKW) joins the initiative "Open to diversity - closed against exclusion".

They are now planning a joint action on the anniversary of the Hanau attack on February 19, the church and alliance announced on Monday in Kassel.

The regional church is the first religious institution to strengthen the cooperation between around 30 companies, municipal institutions and associations, which has so far mainly been North Hesse.

“Open to diversity” became known nationwide through public engagement after the murder of Kassel's district president Walter Lübcke (CDU).

The initiative is committed to democracy and diversity in their different dimensions.

"The terrible attack in Hanau in February 2020 and of course the murder of Walter Lübcke showed us how important it is to stick together and stand up against racism," said Beate Hofmann, Bishop of EKKW.

The aim now is to introduce the campaign in Hanau.

In memory of the victims of the Hanau attack, special door signs were distributed to companies, private households, associations and public institutions in the city.

The regional church plans to draw attention to the initiative with large-format banners on church towers.
