Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Shortly before the new federal-state talks on the corona crisis, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) expressed skepticism about the FFP2 mask requirement.

There is no doubt that the masks are medically more effective than everyday masks, Laumann said on Monday in Düsseldorf.

Before deciding on an obligation to wear FFP2 masks in certain areas, it must be clear whether they are available in sufficient quantities.

"There is different news," said Laumann.

After all, the masks would have to be changed every few hours.

Laumann warned that there should not be a bottleneck in medical areas or where FFP2 masks are necessary for health and safety reasons.

"You have to think about everything from the end."

Alternatively, the use of surgical masks can also be considered.

The President of the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association, Hans-Albert Gehle, also warned of possible supply bottlenecks and rising prices for FFP2 masks in the clinical area.

The hospitals no longer wanted advice from the Robert Koch Institute on how to reprocess their medical masks so they could wear them longer due to insufficient supplies.
