Harburg / Hamburg (dpa) - After the end of a controversial animal testing laboratory in the Harburg district, the site is now home to a project in favor of neglected dogs.

The Hamburg Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology (LPT) announced on Monday that a rehabilitation center for dogs is to start on the approximately two hectare area of the former LPT laboratory in Mienenbüttel.

The leaseholder is the animal center Neu Wulmstorf GmbH, it was said.

The facility is intended to receive and treat dogs classified as dangerous that have come from confiscations and seizures.

The facility also offers space for up to 48 individual housings for animals that have to be isolated according to the Animal Disease Act.

A found animal area is also to be set up on the site for the Harburg district.

A 5-star dog resort, a dog school, an animal physiotherapy practice, a veterinary clinic, a pet store, a dog hairdresser and an animal healer are also being considered.

The LPT's animal research laboratory in Mienenbüttel was closed a year ago.

The employees working there have since been laid off.

This chapter is now closed, said LPT managing director Thomas Wiedermann according to the announcement.

Animal rights activists reported on the mistreatment of dogs and monkeys in the laboratory in autumn 2019.

The Harburg district then withdrew LPT's permission to keep vertebrates for animal experiments.

The company had to give 96 dogs that were still living in the institution to suitable third parties within two weeks.
