Lützerath (dpa / lnw) - Environmental activist Luisa Neubauer criticized the new CDU Chairman and Prime Minister Armin Laschet for demolition work on a village in the Rhenish lignite mining area.

"While half of Germany is puzzling over what to expect from #Laschet in the future, excavators are destroying the village of Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia," wrote the activist from the climate protection movement Fridays for Future on Twitter.

In Lützerath on Monday opponents of lignite protested against demolition work in the largely empty village at the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine.

It is one of the villages that is to give way to the Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine operated by RWE Power.

Greenpeace also criticized the new CDU chief.

The environmental organization said he was having "villages destroyed for the climate killer lignite."

With his coal policy, Laschet is destroying any trust that the Union wants to protect the climate and homeland for the people.
