Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Greens are calling for a higher pace of measures for climate protection.

Berlin as a metropolis and German capital has a special responsibility in this context.

"We have to do our part to ensure that Germany adheres to the climate targets agreed in the Paris Agreement," demanded the Green Group in the House of Representatives on Monday.

"In view of a federal government that has neglected climate protection for decades and the warnings from climate science, we must tighten our climate policy goals."

Making Berlin climate neutral by 2050 is no longer enough.

"Our goal must be for Berlin to become climate neutral by 2035."

What would be necessary for this is what the Greens parliamentary group wants on Friday (January 22) at a conference on the subject of "Berlin for Future: How can radically sensible climate protection succeed?"

to discuss.

Among other things, there will be a conversation between the green top candidate for the House of Representatives election, Bettina Jarasch with Prof. Christian Thomsen, President of the Technical University of Berlin, as well as contributions from scientists, climate protectors and also from Environment Senator Regine Günther.

The program also includes several workshops on climate policy issues.

“In the transport sector, CO2 emissions continue to rise, we have to stop that.

By further improving the public transport and cycling services and at the same time depriving the car of privileges ”, said parliamentary group leader Antje Kapek.

«We see: whoever sows cycle paths will reap cycle traffic.

The same also applies to motorways.

That is why we advocate a stop at the federal government for the expansion of federal highways and motorways in Berlin. "
