One of the activists involved in the fight for gender equality is Haifa Jaafar.
Normally she works in a laboratory, but since the revolution in 2019 she spends all her time helping to build a new Sudan.
Almost every day she goes to a cafe in the capital Khartoum to meet other activists.
- We are talking about the fact that rights and freedoms must also apply to women and that certain laws must be abolished.
We could not dream of that before, she says.
During the revolution, Haifa demonstrated against dictator Omar al-Bashir, who was forced out of power due to mass protests.
- I'm proud that I was a part of it.
I was one of many women who was a driving force and brought the revolution forward.
Young women certainly played a crucial role in the revolution, but the real participation of women in leading roles does not correspond to the role that women played during the revolution, according to Haifa.
- After the fall of the regime and the formation of a new government with 20 ministries, we only got three ministerial posts, she says.
At the same time, some changes have taken place when it comes to strengthening women's and girls' rights.
Sudanese authorities recently announced that they will fight child marriage and female genital mutilation.
The law prohibiting women from wearing "inappropriate" clothing, such as trousers, has also been abolished.
