Schriesheim (dpa / lsw) - According to initial investigations, a burning candle caused a fire in Schriesheim in the Rhein-Neckar district on Sunday evening.

Four residents suffered smoke inhalation and had to be treated in hospital, the police said on Monday.

The candle burning unsupervised is said to have set fire to a cupboard in the living room.

The incoming fire brigade was already struck by flames meters high.

Although it was able to prevent it from spreading to other rooms, the apartment is still uninhabitable.

There was property damage of around 80,000 euros.

A cat died as a result of the fire.
