Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In a letter to the municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, two state ministers urged the nationwide introduction of the IT system "Sormas" in the health authorities.

According to the letter from Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) and Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP), it offers the opportunity to “map future chains of infection across cities and districts” and could be a contribution to fighting pandemics.

No more time should be lost to speed up the introduction in all 53 health authorities in the country.

So far, 35 of the offices would use the system or actively deal with it, said Pinkwart in a statement on the letter dated January 15.

This is "a good signal".

He also said: "We support the municipalities in making a quick implementation possible and are committed to providing the necessary interfaces to the respective reporting programs and ensuring that data protection requirements are met."

The Sormas IT system (Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System) was developed by the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Braunschweig with the support of the Federal Ministry of Health.

It is a so-called open source software, for which there are no license fees.
