The legendary American music producer Phil Spector died Saturday of "natural death" at the age of 81, the California Prison Department said in a statement on Sunday (January 17th).

Producer with innovative methods, at the helm behind hits like the Beatles album "Let It Be", Phil Spector was imprisoned for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003.

Creator of the production technique called Wall of Sound, Spector pioneered female vocal groups in the 1960s, producing over 25 US Top 40 hits in the period 1960-1965.

He works with many artists, including Ike and Tina Turner, John Lennon and George Harrison.
