January 17, 2021 The cold wave that has hit Italy, especially in the central-southern regions, will not last long, a small rise in temperatures is expected in the middle of next week.

This was stated by Marina Baldi, climatologist of the Ibimet (Institute of Biometeorology) of the CNR, interviewed by RaiNews24.

At the origin of this wave there are two elements: the arrival of a mass of Arctic origin and the perturbations coming from the Atlantic and already present.

This wave is involving Western Europe, affecting the Mediterranean Sea, and since Italy is at the center of the Mediterranean area, it is fully taken.

On what this 2021 will be like from a climate point of view, it is still too early to say - Baldi specified -, after all, "we have seen similar events in the past, but they did not affect the average for the entire year".

Maybe this episode will repeat itself again, it is only mid-winter, but "I don't expect a particularly cold year on average".

"Italy is freezing in a month of January that has up to now counted 23 extreme climatological events including hail, tornadoes, anomalous snowfalls, avalanches and lightning storms that have struck along the entire peninsula causing damage in the cities and in the countryside but also victims ".

This is what emerges from the Coldiretti analysis on data from the European Severe Weather Database (ESWD) on the occasion of the Siberian cold wave that hit Italy.

"The multiplication of extreme events with a higher frequency of violent events, seasonal delays, short and intense rainfall and the rapid transition from the sun to bad weather that has lost over 14 billion euros is also confirmed in the new year. in a decade, between falls in national agricultural production and damage to structures and infrastructures in the countryside with flooding, landslides and landslides ".
