Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The number of applications for recognition of a foreign school leaving certificate below the Abitur has decreased in Hesse.

From August 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020, 4,322 applications for such qualifications were registered, compared with 5051 applications in the previous school year.

This emerges from a response from the Ministry of Culture in Wiesbaden to a request from the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament.

In the same period, however, the number of applications for recognition of the international baccalaureate "International Baccalaureate" rose from 88 to 142.

Foreign educational certificates that do not serve for university entrance are checked and recognized nationwide centrally by the education authority for the Darmstadt-Dieburg district and the city of Darmstadt.

It depends on equivalence with a Hessian school leaving certificate, explained the ministry.

"For example, equality with the local secondary school leaving certificate requires, among other things, proof of at least nine years of school attendance in ascending order."

Of the applications submitted in the 2018/2019 school year for school-leaving qualifications below the Abitur, 3311 were positive and 54 were rejected.

In the 2019/2020 school year, 1,692 applications were accepted and 48 rejected.

As the Ministry of Culture explained, many proceedings were closed before a decision could be made, for example because the applicant moved to another country.

In addition, many applications are still being processed because documents are missing.

When the international Abitur was recognized, the majority of the applications were approved in both school years.
