Erfurt (dpa / th) - Jena constitutional lawyer Michael Brenner doubts that a constitutional amendment is the appropriate means to extend the preparation time for a new election in Thuringia.

"You have to ask yourself whether it would be a convincing way if the state parliament would change the constitution because of a deadline," said Brenner of the German press agency.

But it is legally possible.

The Left, SPD, Greens and the CDU had previously agreed to postpone the state elections originally planned for April to September 26th.

In addition, the four parties want to look for further ways in which a new election can come about.

So they want to check whether the legislative period can be shortened by changing the constitution.

Then there might be more time to prepare.

A change in the period from the dissolution of the state parliament to the new election from 70 to 100 days is also under discussion.

In both cases, the constitution would have to be changed.
