The former parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz, who was again defeated in the race for the CDU chairmanship, should be closely involved by the new party leader Armin Laschet from the point of view of CSU leader Markus Söder.

In principle, he would like Merz to “stay on the team”, said the Bavarian Prime Minister on Saturday evening in the ZDF “heute journal”.

As someone who has lost a chairman election twice, but only barely, Merz is one of them, said Söder.

Regarding Merz's surprising proposal to become Federal Minister of Economics instead of Peter Altmaier (CDU), Söder said that everyone agreed “that we don't need any change”.

When asked, Söder again did not specifically comment on his own ambitions for the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

He will talk to the new CDU leader Armin Laschet about the subject in good time, at Easter or afterwards.

Choosing a not too early date is smart and farsighted.

“Those who start too early can also make serious mistakes,” he said, referring to the SPD and the early nomination of Finance Minister Olaf Scholz as candidate for chancellor.

Söder said that for the majority of people, completely different questions are now important than the Union's candidacy for chancellor, namely how to successfully combat the corona pandemic.
