According to reports, the Dutch tax agency asked thousands of families who had received childcare allowance to refund the allowance between 2013 and 2019.

Some families even have to return tens of thousands of euros. This incident has caused economic and psychological burdens on many Dutch families.

In December 2020, the Dutch parliament issued an investigation report on this issue, confirming that the tax agency had administrative fault in this matter.

Due to the constant fermentation of childcare allowance incidents, on January 15, 2021, Rutte announced that the cabinet he led formally resigned on the same day.

Rutte said at a press conference that the government “did not meet the standards throughout the incident” and “the result was that thousands of parents suffered serious unfair treatment”.

The current cabinet was sworn in in October 2017. This is Rutte's third cabinet formation.

According to the British "Guardian", Rutte is expected to remain prime minister of the caretaker cabinet until the parliamentary elections are held on March 17, 2021.

According to foreign media analysis, Rutte is expected to form a government again in the March elections. In opinion polls, Rutte is currently far ahead of its competitors.
