Stuttgart (AP) - With a last-minute penalty, VfB Stuttgart has just averted the next home defeat and Borussia Mönchengladbach's coach Marco Rose spoiled a victory for the anniversary.

Silas Wamangituka (90 + 6) converted a penalty kick and saved the host in the Bundesliga from a 2-2 (1-0) against the Gladbach team.

After goals from Captain Stindl (35th minute / penalty kick) and Denis Zakaria (61st), the Champions League round of 16 looked like the winner for a long time, with whom the team would have given coach Rose for the 50th game as Bundesliga coach .

Nicolas Gonzalez (58th) had made the interim connection for VfB with the 3000th Bundesliga goal of the Swabians.

For Gladbach, the draw was a setback in the fight for the Champions League places.

With 25 points, they remain in seventh place.

The Stuttgart team, still without a win at home, made their fifth draw and are tenth.

The first half of the season will end for the promoted team without any sense of achievement in their own stadium.

In just two and a half weeks there is a chance for revenge: VfB and Mönchengladbach will meet again in the DFB Cup in the Stuttgart Arena (February 3) and then fight for a place in the quarter-finals.

The top game of the 16th Bundesliga matchday took off after just under a quarter of an hour.

Gonzalez developed the first danger on the hosts' side when he ran away in the sprint from Gladbach's defender Nico Elvedi, but the Argentinean then played his pass into the middle too imprecisely.

Midfielder Orel Mangala failed to pass Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer (13th).

Overall, the Stuttgarters lacked precision in the first half.

On the Gladbach side, attacker Breel Embolo was able to play right from the start after his hand operation.

Coach Rose trusted the same starting eleven as they did in the 3-2 win against FC Bayern Munich.

And Embolo made for the first dangerous scene of the hosts when he prevailed against the VfB defense chief Waldemar Anton, who got fit in time, but VfB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was there.

After a nice play by Stindl and Stefan Lainer, VfB defender Pascal Stenzel was able to clear it shortly afterwards.

Both coaches were impressed by the opponent's offensive game, but VfB helped to guide the guests.

Winger Borna Sosa gave referee Felix Brych no choice but to decide on a penalty with his defensive behavior against Stefan Lainer.

Stindl took responsibility once again and gave VfB goalkeeper Kobel no chance with his shot in the upper left corner - Rose sat in his seat and applauded: Stindl has already converted five penalties this season and shares the best value in the Bundesliga with Frankfurt's Andre Silva .

It was only the second time that the Gladbachers were allowed to take a tour of the dressing room this season.

After the break, however, the Stuttgart team was noticeable: VfB defender Anton had the first chance, Matthias Ginter cleared for his keeper Sommer in front of the line.

Gonzalez then equalized with his pass to cross giver Sosa himself, then shot into the penalty area - and executed with a fine header in flight.

The joy of the Stuttgarters over the 1-1 was only short-lived: With a fine pass to Zakaria, Stindl prepared the renewed lead.

In stoppage time, Wamangituka saved the Stuttgart team a point.
