Hanover (dpa / lni) - Last year, fewer refugees came to Lower Saxony for the fifth time in a row.

A total of 8,558 people were registered with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees for the country - almost half of them from Syria, as the Interior Ministry in Hanover announced on request.

In total, more than 141,000 refugees live in Lower Saxony.

In 2019, 11,586 newly arrived refugees were counted.

This corresponds to a decrease of 26 percent.

The last time the number of registered refugees in Lower Saxony was lower than in 2020 was in 2012. The state had a peak in 2015 when around 102,000 refugees arrived.

The two most common countries of origin remained unchanged.

By the end of November, 3775 Syrians (2019: 4318) and 1624 Iraqis (2019: 2217) had applied for asylum.

Many applicants also came from Afghanistan (815) and Turkey (516).

The Lower Saxony Refugee Council recently called for the admission of more people and refers to 42 cities, municipalities and municipalities that have the capacity to accommodate and have declared themselves to be so-called safe havens.

Around 3,000 admission places are also available in the state's facilities.

According to the Refugee Council, the aid is currently particularly needed by around 900 people, whose emergency accommodation in the Bosnian Lipa camp burned down shortly before Christmas.

By sealing off its external border in the Balkans, the European Union created this emergency itself, the association criticized.
