Dresden / Berlin (dpa) - In Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, the Federal Armed Forces play an important role in combating the corona pandemic.
A total of around 1,300 soldiers are deployed in the three countries (as of January 6).
This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the Saxon FDP member of the Bundestag Torsten Herbst.
Most of them help out in Saxony - around 850 are available to the emergency services in health authorities, hospitals and nursing homes.
In Saxony-Anhalt, 130 soldiers help mainly in health departments, but also in retirement homes.
In Thuringia, 144 armed forces provide help in health authorities, around 100 in nursing homes and 69 in hospitals.
"Without the support of the Bundeswehr, a lot of the pandemic control would not have been possible," emphasized Herbst.
"The pandemic of the century has hit our community and especially our health and care system hard."

According to figures from the Robert Koch Institute, Thuringia is the nationwide negative leader in terms of the number of new corona infections within one week per 100,000 inhabitants.
The incidence value on Saturday morning was 268, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt followed with 256 and 235 respectively. Nationwide, the value was 139.
