Mohammed bin Rashid sponsors the summit of the Global Forum for Migration and Development chaired by the UAE

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the activities of the Global Forum for Migration and Development Summit in its thirteenth session, which will continue until January 26, will start tomorrow, Monday, under


the

chairmanship

of the UAE, which is the first Gulf country to chair the forum .

The Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the current president of the forum, Nasser bin Thani Al-Hamli, will inaugurate the work of the summit, which is held virtually under the slogan "The future of human mobility ... innovative partnerships for sustainable development" with the participation of more than 2000 participants representing more than 100 countries, international organizations and consultative tracks. International figures as well as high-ranking international figures, including Antonio Vitorino, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, Angel Gurria, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Wilva Johansson, Commissioner for Internal Affairs of the European Union, Princess Al-Fadil, Commissioner for Social Affairs of the African Union, and Luis Almagro,


Secretary-General of the Organization of American States.

The Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation for Communication and International Relations, Abdullah Al-Nuaimi, stressed that the summit is an ideal opportunity for governments, policy-makers, international organizations, international consultative tracks and all those interested to discuss policies, challenges and opportunities related to development files and the migration of temporary contractual work, especially in the post-Corona phase.

He pointed out that all the necessary arrangements have been made for the summit to be held in a manner befitting the reputation and position of the UAE as an active international partner in the issues of development, work and the country's leadership in managing


international conferences and events, especially since an electronic platform has been developed using the latest technological technologies to conduct the summit's work and ensure the interaction of the participants. In the sessions by providing simultaneous interpretation into four languages.

He explained that the summit embodies the priorities of the UAE's vision, according to which it has led the forum since it assumed its presidency from the Ecuadorian government in January 2020, with a focus on increasing international cooperation and innovative partnerships aimed at improving human lives around the world.

He stressed that the UAE has succeeded in implementing the work program that emerged


from its vision to run the forum despite the challenges posed by the Corona pandemic and the restrictions imposed on travel, as an innovative approach was adopted based on visual communication technology to hold 30 virtual events aimed at organizing six major consultations between regions of the world. The five is Asia and the Pacific, Arab countries, South Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, during the period from May to July 2020.

Al-Nuaimi explained that during the summit, 34 working sessions will be held, during which the outcomes of the six consultative meetings will be discussed in terms of the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy and its implications for development and work.


The summit will also discuss the governance of temporary contractual labor migration in light of the variables governing the future of work, employment needs, skills training for workers, technology investment to enable mobile workers and ways to protect them and limit irregular movement between countries of sending and receiving workers, as well as strengthening partnerships between all parties to achieve goals related to international migration within The United Nations' sustainable development agenda.

It is noteworthy that the Global Migration Forum was launched in 2006, as it constitutes a governmental consultative process concerned with voluntary cooperation among the member states of the United Nations with the aim of enhancing the developmental returns of migration of temporary contractual work, and its annual work culminates in a summit hosted by the main country of the forum, which was chaired by Belgium, the Philippines


, Greece and Mexico. Switzerland, Mauritius, Sweden, Turkey, Bangladesh, Germany, Morocco, Ecuador and the United Arab Emirates are the current chairs of the forum.
